Department awaits report from bully video school
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the Krugerlaan School in Vereeniging, Gauteng, today after the emergence of a video showing an alleged incident of bullying at the school, the department said.
According to provincial education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane, the department was made aware of the video on Sunday after it was uploaded on to Facebook by Nicolaas Putter. The incident is believed to have taken place on Friday.
“The principal has met with the parents of the victim, and the department is expecting a report from the school,” Sekhonyane said.
In the video, one pupil is seen slapping, punching and kneeing another boy inside a classroom while other pupils, as well as an adult man believed to be a teacher, look on.
“What are you going to do?” the one student repeatedly says while assaulting his fellow pupil. Exact details surrounding the incident are still unclear.
Sekhonyane added the department’s labour relations section had been instructed to go into the school to investigate “the issue of the supervision of learners”.
The incident comes after three pupils were expelled from Vukuzakhe High School in Umlazi, Durban, after a Facebook video showing them beating up a fellow school mate went viral.
The girls were initially suspended shortly after the incident took place in September 2014, and their expulsion came after the school’s governing body held a tribunal to discuss the matter further.
