The pet economy is thriving in South Africa, despite tough economic conditions, which means that there will be gifts under the tree for the four-legged family members in many homes across the country this year.

A survey by Rover.com reveals that up to 95% of pet owners in the UK plan to buy Christmas presents for their cats and dogs, while a 2022 study by Personal Capital showed that more Americans intended to buy gifts for their pets than for their in-laws.

In South Africa, retailers say they’ve noticed a similar increase in consumers wanting to spoil their furry friends, says Absolute Pets’ marketing manager Genevieve Adams. “In keeping with the pet humanisation trend we’ve seen over the past few years, more people are including their pets in special occasions, holidays and family celebrations. Birthday ‘pawties’ are becoming more common, and picking out a perfect gift for a pet for Christmas or other special occasions is important to many of our customers.”

The pet food market alone in South Africa is worth over R8b, according to data from Statista. Add to that the increased demand for pet-friendly holiday accommodation and restaurants, and the introduction to the market of luxury pet items such as strollers, ice cream and orthopaedic dog beds, and you will see that the pet industry is booming.

Adams says that when choosing gifts, toys and treats, pet owners must make sure nothing poses a choking hazard or contains material that can be harmful to their pets.

“Chocolate, raisins and mince pies are off-limits. And if you’re buying a cute Christmas outfit or anything to be worn by your pet, make sure the fabric is light and soft and the garment is the right size so your pet remains comfortable.”
