Disability grant fraud: Former Botlokwa nurse to appear in court
A former Botlokwa nurse is set to appear in court today for their alleged involvement in a R50 000 Sassa disability grant fraud scheme.
A former professional nurse from Botlokwa Clinic is scheduled to appear in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court today after their arrest by Limpopo’s Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.
According to Polokwane Review, the arrest is linked to their alleged role in a disability grant fraud scheme involving R50 000.
The 57-year-old suspect, previously employed by the Department of Health, was taken into custody following an in-depth investigation into fraudulent Sassa disability grant applications.
Investigation origins
The case dates back to April 2024, when Botlokwa SAPS opened a fraud docket after it emerged that the accused had helped community members apply for disability grants despite them not meeting the qualifying criteria.
Several applicants went on to receive payments from Sassa, resulting in a confirmed loss of R50 000.
Botlokwa detectives initially handled the investigation, arresting a woman on April 17, 2024. She appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court and was released on a warning. The matter was later withdrawn pending further investigation.
Anti-corruption unit takes over
The case was then transferred to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, where further enquiries linked the former nurse to the scheme.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, evidence shows that Sassa disability forms were completed and signed on behalf of a medical doctor without permission.
Following a decision by the director of Public Prosecutions, a warrant of arrest was issued and executed.
Police confirmed that summons will also be issued for the previously arrested female accomplice, allowing her case to proceed alongside that of the main accused.
The investigation is ongoing.
