Dog owners warned of dog poisoning in Secunda

The past week also saw the confiscating of substances know as Aldicarb, or better known as two step, which is a carbamate pesticide used for dog poisoning, at the taxi rank by local police.

Dog owners are being warned of the increase in dog poisoning in the Secunda area. The latest area where dogs were poisoned was in Echo Street.

The police also confiscated 38 small packets of Aldicarb, or better known as two step, which is a carbamate pesticide used for dog poisoning. The cops seized this at the taxi rank in Secunda.

Dog owners can identify poisoning if your animal shows signs and symptoms of spitting and foaming of the mouth, vomiting and diarrhea, twitching and shivering, seizures, disorientation and paralysis. Death is most common due to respiratory failure.

“It is important to report the poisoning to your local police, the SPCA and local neighbourhood watch, as it could lead to an increase in criminal activity in your area,” said Ms Mariska Strydom, chairperson of the Highveld Ridge SPCA.

She said it is important to collect a sample of the food or poison in a plastic bag and to take it with to the vet.

It is also important to place your pet on a plastic bag in your car and transport it to the veterinarian immediately.

“Wash any area of you body that has come into contact with the poison or body fluids as Aldicarb is poisonous to humans too,” said Ms Strydom.

Rescue poison packs are readily available at the Local Choice Pharmacy Medico at the Ridge Plaza.

Rescue poison packs can be stored and the shelf life is about two years, if stored correctly.

“This is not a cure or antidote, this is only an emergency measure to buy some time to get your pet to a proper veterinary for treatment,” said Ms Strydom.

She said the chance of survival is time sensitive and depends on veterinary prognosis.

“It will also depend on how much poison the animal consumed and how much time has passed since consumption.”

She said the only way to prevent animals form being poisoned, is to let your pets sleep in doors.

“Before letting them out for their potty runs, just to do a yard inspection and look for strange items,” concluded Ms Strydom

If you suspect Aldicarb poisoning, you should contact your nearest vet immediately.
