Dozens of stabbings reported over the weekend

Police have arrested dozens of suspects following multiple fatal stabbing incidents across the country over the weekend.

A number of suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in various courts during the week.


On Sunday, the provincial Cooperative Governance Department confirmed that Bheki Mazibuko, deputy mayor of the uThekela district municipality, had been stabbed to death in Bergville.

Although details surrounding Mazibuko’s death remain sketchy, it was believed that he was stabbed in the neck following an argument during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said two suspects were arrested in connection with the murder.

Naicker said one of the men was found in possession of a knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, and that both men would appear in the Bergville Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

On the same day, three matric pupils were reportedly stabbed to death at a party in Richards Bay.

The victims, aged between 18 and 23, were celebrating the end of their exams when they were allegedly stabbed to death, Zululand Observer reported.

It was reported that pupils attending the function became involved in a brawl which got out of control.

The victims sustained fatal stab wounds to their bodies. Three counts of murder are being investigated by Richards Bay police.

North West

A number of stabbings took place in the North West over the weekend.

On Sunday, a 29-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stabbing and killing a Mozambican man during a fight over a woman in Swartruggens.

Police spokesperson Captain Pelonomi Makau said the man would appear in court on Monday facing a murder charge.

In a separate incident, Mahikeng police arrested another 29-year-old man for fatally stabbing a woman believed to be his girlfriend.

The 24-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck and breast in Lonely Park Village.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was stabbed to death during an argument, in a tavern in Madibogo while on Friday, a 38-year-old security officer was stabbed in the back of the head in the Modimole Village.

The owner of the shop he worked at reportedly called for the man after four people had tied him up.

The security guard died as a result of the stabbing, while the robber ran off with his firearm, airtime vouchers and the shop owner’s cellphone.


In Mpumalanga, three men were set to appear in the Ermelo Magistrates’ Court today after stabbing another man to death on Thursday.

Three Pakistani nationals, aged between 21 and 35, were arrested for stabbing and killing a Bangladeshi man, Tariq Rashid Mohamed (31) after police received a complaint of fighting.

Mohamed, who was stabbed several times in his chest, head and back, was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.


In Gauteng, a 29-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing another man to death in Moroka, Soweto, on Saturday.

The suspect and another man were allegedly fighting at a shebeen when the incident occurred.

The 24-year-old victim reportedly died on the scene.

People at the shebeen, who witnessed the fight, then reported the incident to police.

The suspect was due in the Protea Magistrates’ Court today.
