Dr Mpho Phalatse back as Johannesburg mayor as court rules in her favour

After fighting for nearly a month, Dr Mpho Phalatse has been reinstated as the mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

The Johannesburg High Court has finally heard the Democratic Alliance’s cries and ruled in Dr Mpho Phalatse’s favour.

The judgment made by the court states that the processes followed by council speaker Colleen Makhubele leading up to the motion of no confidence against Phalatse were invalid.

Phalatse took to Twitter to announce her victory and said: “We won for democracy.”

The Democratic Alliance also took to Twitter to share the news and said that the court has declared the removal of Dr Mpho Phalatse as the mayor unlawful.

“This is a victory for the Rule of Law. With 71% of promises delivered within 10 months, Dr Mpho will continue to focus on delivery,” the DA said.

The leader of the party, John Steenhuisen, added: “This is a massive victory for democracy and the rule of law. We have always maintained that the ANC’s power grab was unlawful. Now is the time for parties committed to service delivery and good governance to unite behind Mayor Mpho Phalatse and stop the corrupt ANC.”
