Drowning tragedy in Darnall, KZN claims twin

A boy (11) has lost his life after gaining entrance to a club swimming pool with his twin brother and a friend.

A family is in mourning after a twin boy drowned in a swimming pool at the Darnall Country Club on Monday.

According to reports, Siyanda Bhengu (11), his twin brother and a friend (9) managed to get into the club grounds despite the club being closed.

Siyanda’s sister, Nomathemba, says her brothers had never been to the club before, and the family was still trying to process the tragedy.

“The club is closed on Mondays and there were no security officers patrolling,” says Nomathemba. She emphasises the family does not blame anyone for the boy’s death.

Siyanda was a Grade 4 pupil at Lee Primary school.

KwaDukuza police spokesperson Priya Nunkumar says an inquest docket has been opened.

“The victim was removed from the pool by paramedics. He was declared deceased at the scene,” says Nunkumar.

The club was contacted for comment but declined as the matter was under investigation.
