Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s terrorism trial date set

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla's terrorism and public violence case, linked to the 2021 July unrest, has been postponed to August for pre-trial.

Jacob Zuma’s daughter and MK Party MP, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s incitement to commit terrorism, and public violence case has been postponed for pre-trial in August, The Witness reports.

Zuma-Sambudla appeared at the Durban High Court on Thursday before Judge Charmaine Bolton who postponed the matter to August 14 for pre-trial and November for trial.

Her charges are related to the 2021 July unrest that swept through the country resulting in at least 350 deaths, costing the economy R50b and leaving nearly two million people jobless.

In January, Zuma-Sambudla (42), was formally charged with incitement to commit terrorism, and two counts of incitement to commit public violence; she denied the charges, and was released on warning.

The state alleges that between June 29 and July 17, 2021, primarily in KZN and Gauteng, she used social media posts to intentionally incite others to commit acts of violence and terrorism.

Explaining the state’s position, NPA Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga said: “The state alleges that she unlawfully incited, instigated, or procured others to disturb public peace and violate the rights of others through her social media messages.”

In the indictment, the state said that through her Twitter posts, she supported, encouraged and associated and thereby incited violence to secure Zuma’s release. “Her statements indicated support of what was transpiring throughout the country at the time.

Zuma-Sambudla and the MK Party maintain that the case is politically motivated.
