E-hailing driver killed, passenger injured in KZN shooting

Details surrounding yet another shooting incident in Tongaat is unclear at this stage, but police investigations are underway.

The driver of an e-hailing vehicle and an alleged passenger were both shot at yesterday morning while travelling on Noodsberg Road, near Sukamani in Tongaat.

Tongaat SAPS acting spokesperson Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie says: “The police received a report of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, one man was found in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, bleeding from the right shoulder while another man, who allegedly exited the vehicle while the shooting occurred, sustained a gunshot wound to his back.”

Both victims were transported to a clinic for medical treatment, however, the driver of the vehicle passed away due to the seriousness of his injuries.

Shootings rife in Tongaat

The incident follows days after three armed robbers pounced on a truck driver and his assistant when they stopped to relieve themselves at the Tongaat toll plaza.

“Two of the men carried handguns. The driver managed to escape, but his assistant was shot in the right shoulder by one of the assailants, who then took two cellphones and money,” Maharaj-Marie said at the time.

A man has been arrested in connection with the robbery.
