Eastern Cape mother arrested for allegedly murdering baby
A woman was assaulted by community members after her deceased baby was found wrapped in a towel, inside a plastic bag, in some bushes.
Police have arrested a 27-year-old woman for allegedly murdering her 11-month-old baby girl in the Eastern Cape.
It is alleged that on January 5, when a man went into the bushes in Nonyevu in Port St Johns to urinate, he found a baby in a refuse bag, the SAPS said in a statement yesterday.
“He alerted members of the community, and the mother was traced.”
According to police information, on December 29, the infant got sick. She passed away at about 05:00 on January 1.
It is believed that the mother wrapped the child in a towel, put her inside a plastic bag, and threw her into the bushes in Nonyevu, where she was living, the SAPS said.
The mother was allegedly assaulted by community members and is in hospital.
She faces a charge of murder and will appear in the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court.
A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the baby’s cause of death. – SAnews.gov.za
