Education department satisfied with 2024 examinations

Despite flooding in the Eastern Cape, the senior certificate exams are progressing smoothly, with no major incidents.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has announced its satisfaction with the progress of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, now in their second week after a smooth first week with no major incidents reported.

“Apart from the 319 learners unable to access the examination centre in Kariega, Eastern Cape, exams proceeded without issues elsewhere in the country,” the department stated.

A total of 727 121 full-time and 155 215 part-time candidates are registered for the exams, held at 6 909 centres across South Africa’s nine provinces.

The DBE expressed gratitude to all involved in administering the examinations. “The department is indebted to the SAPS for assisting some NSC candidates trapped by flooding in the Eastern Cape. The learners were transported safely in a SAPS Nyala and were able to write their exams on time.”

The department also urged all candidates to uphold the integrity of the examination by avoiding cheating, while invigilators are encouraged to stay vigilant.

Additionally, the department called on the public to refrain from protests that could disrupt the examination process, especially those involving road blockages.
