Ekurhuleni MMC missing after vehicle swept away by floods in Mozambique

Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport Andile Mngwevu is missing after floodwaters swept away a vehicle in Chokwé.

The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Cllr Andile Mngwevu, is missing following a flooding incident in Mozambique.

According to information received through official diplomatic and security channels, Mngwevu had travelled to the Chokwé area when the vehicle in which he was travelling was swept away by floodwaters, Germiston City News reports.

The City said a South African rescue mission deployed to Mozambique has established contact with one of the five people who were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

However, the status and whereabouts of Mngwevu and the remaining occupants have not yet been confirmed.

“The South African mission is actively engaging local Mozambican authorities and emergency services in the affected area,” the City of Ekurhuleni said.

The office of the mayor, working alongside national government, has facilitated support for Mngwevu’s spouse, who arrived in Mozambique on Tuesday night. National authorities are also exploring additional support measures, including security and possible evacuation assistance, as more information becomes available.

The City said it remains in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and other relevant national structures as search and verification efforts continue.

Further updates will be shared through official City of Ekurhuleni communication channels once information has been confirmed.

During what it described as a deeply difficult time, the City appealed to the public and the media to respect the privacy of the Mngwevu family and to refrain from speculation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those affected as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” the City said.
