Elderly fisherman still missing near Herold’s Bay

Two drones were deployed as part of an air, sea and shoreline search for a 70-year-old man who was swept off rocks while fishing at Voëlklip yesterday.

Flares are currently being deployed at Voëlklip to assist in the ongoing search for a missing fisherman (70) who was swept off the rocks while fishing yesterday. The public is urged not to report the flares as an emergency, reports George Herald.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)Wilderness station commander Jonathan Britton says emergency services were activated following reports that a local fisherman had been swept off while shoreline angling.

A search commenced for the man, who had reportedly been swept off the rocks during the turn of the spring low tide.

An emergency medical services rescue drone was deployed, while members of the George community policing forum assisted using another drone.

Police divers joined the search operation, while the NSRI rescue craft conducted searches beyond the backline in calm sea conditions. Shoreline teams continued scanning the coast.

Illuminating flares were deployed to aid visibility.

Fishing gear believed to belong to the missing man was recovered from the water during the search.

Despite the extensive air, sea and shoreline search efforts, the man has not yet been found.

The police divers are continuing with ongoing search operations.

The NSRI lifeguards on duty today and over the Easter weekend have been tasked to remain on alert and keep a lookout.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing man during this difficult time,” Britton says.
