A resident received a shock recently when a murder committed in Emthonjeni, 117km away from eMalahleni, had police knocking on his door for answers.

On June 9 in the early morning hours, police were alerted to a murder scene in the township of Emthonjeni in eNtokozweni (Machadodorp).

According to reports, the resident was questioned in a murder where a husband allegedly shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

The firearm used in the attack was booked into the Emthonjeni Police Station and went through ballistics.

After testing was concluded, it was found that the firearm used in the altercation belonged to a person staying in eMalahleni.

Police questioned the man regarding his firearm and its whereabouts and the man told the police that his firearm was in his safe.

Police instructed the man to open his safe to confirm his statement.

Upon opening the safe, the firearm was not inside.

The man allegedly had no idea the weapon was missing and had no answers as to how the weapon left the safe without his knowledge.

Investigations are still underway to determine how the murder weapon landed in the possession of the alleged murderer.

Captain Eddie Hall, the local police spokesperson, said that owners of firearms should take more caution.

“Firearm owners should at least once a month open their safes and confirm if the weapon is still there,” Hall concluded.
