While Women’s Month is being celebrated, doubts have been raised whether the South African Football Federation (Safa) will be able to pay the bonuses it had promised Banyana Banyana players ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).

The South African reports that Safa in June, pledged R9.2m towards Banyana Banyana should they win the 2022 Wafcon.

The national women’s soccer team beat the hosting nation Morocco 2-1 in the finals.

South Africa came to a standstill after the victory with Banyana Banyana being crowned the African queens. The country packed the OR Tambo International to give them a warm welcome for making South Africa proud.

It was there that sports minister Nathi Mthethwa, announced his office is adding R5.8 million to Banyana Banyana’s bonusses.

President Cyril Ramaphosa honoured Banyana Banyana when he hosted them at the Union Building a day after they arrived from Morocco. Ramaphosa challenged Safa President Danny Jordaan to pay Banyana Banyana players bonuses equal to the men’s team, Bafana Bafana.

He said that there should be no discrimination when it comes to national teams as they also represent the country. However, after the ceremony Danny Jordaan told the media that the R8.6 million CAF prize money belongs to Safa and the organisation must also consider a lot of things like bills.

This didn’t go down well for many South Africans, including parliament. Parliament raised concerns that SAFA might not be able to pay Banyana Banyana their bonuses.

eNCA political analyst JJ Tabane publicly attacked Safa on his show Power To Truth and accused the organisation of sexism.

At this stage it is not yet clear when and how much Banyana Banyana will get as bonuses.
