Eskom announces stage 5 load-shedding until Monday

The power utility says if further breakdowns occur, higher stages of load-shedding might be implemented at short notice.

Stage 5 load-shedding will be implemented between 10:00 on Saturday and 05:00 on Monday, Eskom has announced.

The power utility says the escalation of load-shedding stages is because five generating units broke down overnight and this morning.

“Their combined capacity [loss] of 2 400MW has necessitated the escalation. Should further breakdowns occur, higher stages of load-shedding may be implemented,” Eskom says.

A media briefing will be held on Sunday to provide an outlook for load-shedding stages for the week ahead.

“Some generation units are anticipated to return to service, but it is necessary to escalate load-shedding to stop the use of emergency generation reserves and begin the replenishment thereof ahead of the week.”
