Eskom strike pushes load-shedding to Stage 4

The power utility says negotiations with unions are currently deadlocked.

Eskom announced this morning that it is compelled to take precautionary measures by increasing the level of load-shedding to protect the grid, due to ongoing unprotected labour action and unsuccessful negotiations with unions.

Stage 4 load-shedding will be implemented from 11:00 until midnight today and again from 05:00 until midnight on Saturday and Sunday.

The power utility says that amid ‘ongoing disturbances’, Stage 4 load-shedding is necessary to help fill the generation deficit in the face of generating units that may trip and also to compensate for the possible inability to return generation units to the grid on time.

Eskom says it is working to resolve the deadlock with unions. It appealed to its labour partners and striking employees to put the people of South Africa first, respect the law and refrain from illegal and undemocratic conduct.

Currently, 2 766MW is on planned maintenance while 17 395MW is unavailable due to breakdowns.

Eskom warned of an elevated risk of load-shedding in coming weeks should the labour unrest situation not improve.
