Man arrested for rape of grandmother (87) and cousin (26) in Amsterdam

After allegedly raping the women, he took his grandmother’s social grant money and left.

A 28-year-old man is accused of raping two of his family members while they were sleeping and robbing his grandmother of all her money.

The man will appear in the Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court today on two charges of rape as well as a charge of house robbery.

Mpumalanga provincial police say that the man is an undocumented eSwatini citizen. The incident occurred on Sunday.

It is alleged that a grandmother (87) and her granddaughter (26) were asleep in the same room. At around 03:00 in the morning the elderly lady woke when someone lifted the blanket she was sleeping under.

Her grandson ordered her to keep quiet and raped her. He then allegedly went to his cousin, who was sleeping on a couch, and raped her too.

Police say that after the rapes, the man demanded his grandmother’s social grant money, which was all the money she had. She gave him the money and he left.

He was arrested after the women reported the incident to the police the next day.

The SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has expressed her shock and at the same time applauded police in Amsterdam for making the arrest.

Manamela says that there is no place for criminals in the province especially those who abuse women and children.
