Certain beaches to the south of Durban have been closed once again after the latest round of testing showed high levels of E. coli bacteria. This comes as a result of rampant sewage spills that continue to plague the eThekwini Municipality.

Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said that while there has been improvement in water quality at some of the beaches, others have deteriorated.

“In the southern region, water quality is poor with the result that some south beaches will be closed with immediate effect,” said Mayisela.

The beaches that have been closed are: Isiphingo, Amanzimtoti Main, Warner Beach, Baggies, Reunion, and Winklespruit beaches. All water activities at these beaches are banned for health reasons.

Beaches that remain open are Karridene, Umgababa, Umkomaas, Brighton, and Treasure beaches.

“The municipality will continue to test water quality at beaches on a regular basis. The public will be notified when it is safe to visit affected beaches,” said Mayisela.
