Ex-Bok sharpshooter signs for the Lions

The pride of Johannesburg has unveiled Morne Steyn as part of the coaching staff in the role of kicking consultant.

An expert former Springbok marksman has joined the Lions ahead of the 2023/24 Vodacom United Rugby Championship.

The Lions this morning officially announced that Morne Steyn has been recruited as the union’s new kicking consultant.

The two-time British & Irish Lions series winner recently retired from professional rugby and will now be working closely with the Johannesburg team’s goalkickers.

Speaking on his appointment, Steyn expressed his eagerness to join the franchise and to get going.

“I’m incredibly excited to get stuck in with the Lions,” said Steyn, who amassed over 700 points in his 68-Test career.

“They are a team with exciting talent and astute professionalism both from a players and coaching perspective, with the potential of achieving great things in the future.”

“I’m particularly looking forward to working closely with the kickers in the squad, and my aim is to make a difference to the team’s kicking strategy. The Lions are extremely fortunate to have great ball strikers; guys like Jordan [Hendrikse], Quan [Horn], and Sanele [Nohamba] are all brilliant kickers, so I’m excited to work with them closely.”

The Lions get their URC campaign underway against the Stormers in Johannesburg on October 21.
