Farm attacks march going online on Saturday

March organisers call all marchers to participate online to create awareness against farm murders and attacks.

Marchers are called to march from home via social media after the TMPD has rejected the application to march to the Union Buildings.

This follows after the Tshwane Metro Department (TMPD) has declined the application for the planned march in awareness of farm murders and attacks which would have taken place on 18 July.

“Should this march go ahead, it will be regarded as illegal,” TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.

Mahamba warned protesters not to engage in any marches or face the consequences.

The group responded by taking the awareness march to social media on 18 July.

“Our farmers need us. They need us to be their voice at a time when they are being targeted, slaughtered, raped and killed,” a stakeholder of the march, Devon Hofmeyr, said.

“After our march to the Union Buildings was rejected by the Metro police, due to external reasons and not internal, we decided that on 18 July we should still make our voices heard against these brutal attacks on our farmers.”

Hofmeyr and the entire panel challenged everyone to post a photo or a video of themselves at midday “where you make your voice heard against farm murders” using the hashtags: lockdownfarmmurders / inblyteenplaasmoorde.

He said the aim is to break the internet with these two hashtags.

“We may be stopped from walking, for now, but we are not going to be silenced. Let’s break the internet on the 18th of July and let the world know that we had enough of these murders of our farmers! Take our hands and let’s become one again in the fight against these attacks.”

On 16 July TMPD announced in a press release the application for the planned march on 18 July has been declined.

“The TMPD received an application for a march by an organisation called South African Farmers, Women and Children of All Races. The TMPD could not approve this march due to the current Covid-19 situation in the country.”

The organisation initially planned to march to the Union Buildings on Saturday, 18 July, from 12:00.
