Final chance to send air mail to family in Australia, says post office

Any items that miss the deadline will be sent to Australia via surface mail, a process that could take up to six weeks.

QANTAS, an Australian airline, has scheduled a flight to Australia during November and this will allow South African families to send gifts through to the country.

In the first repatriation flight in August this year, 1 387kg of mail was sent to Australia.

“No regular flights are available between South Africa and Australia. Customers must hand items for Australia in at their local post office no later than November 17, 2021,” the airline said in a statement.

According to the airline, items that are posted late and miss the repatriation flight will be forwarded to Australia by surface mail. This could take up to six weeks to arrive.

No items containing animal or plant products, medication or any illegal substance may be posted.

“Liquids that may leak, or items such as aerosols which could explode in an unpressurised aircraft, may not be posted. All outgoing parcels are x-rayed to check the contents for banned items,” the statement read.
