Fire damages Voortrekker Monument grounds and water infrastructure

A blaze that broke out just after midnight caused extensive damage to the grounds of a historic Pretoria landmark.

A fire that swept through parts of the Voortrekker Monument grounds in Pretoria caused extensive damage, including to water infrastructure, after firefighters and volunteers worked into the early hours this morning (October 29) to extinguish it.

The fire broke out during the afternoon, prompting a response from Tshwane firefighters, AfriForum, Fidelity SecureFire, the Sinoville Firefighting Association and the Apiesrivier Fire Protection Association, reports Pretoria Rekord.

Staff from Kultuurtuiste, a facility on the monument grounds, also assisted as emergency teams worked amid flames, smoke and intense heat to contain the blaze and protect the site’s animals and heritage grounds. Kultuurtuiste itself was not damaged.

The fire was eventually extinguished, but the full extent of the damage remains unclear. No financial estimate was provided, and it was not specified which parts of the water infrastructure were affected.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
