Fire guts popular Durban restaurant

Three people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire gutted the long-standing Delfi Greek Taverna in Windermere, Durban, yesterday afternoon (September 3).

The popular Greek restaurant on Lilian Ngoyi Road, near Livingstone Road, was engulfed in flames shortly before 17:00, sending a thick plume of smoke over the area that could be seen from as far away as Berea, reports Berea Mail.

Delfi Greek Taverna has been a fixture in the Windermere area for years, with the family-run restaurant known for its traditional Greek food and homely atmosphere.

The eThekwini Fire Department was already at the scene when ALS Paramedics arrived and was battling to contain the fire.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the building was ‘well alight’ when emergency crews arrived.

‘Paramedics assessed three people on the scene who had sustained minor smoke inhalation and refused further treatment and transportation,’ he said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Jamieson said SAPS officers were at the scene and would investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire with the eThekwini Fire Department.

By 18:00, firefighters remained at the restaurant, damping down the building to prevent the fire from reigniting.
