Foreign national dies after alleged 8th-floor jump amid protests in KZN

Fearing he was under attack, a foreign national plummeted to his death from a Durban storage facility where he was allegedly staying.

An inquest docket has been opened following the death of a foreign national who allegedly jumped from the eighth floor of a building on Margaret Mncadi Avenue on Monday (June 29), reports Berea Mail.

According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda the victim was one of three that had allegedly broken into a storage facility and were staying there for three days before tragedy struck.

“On Monday night, they reportedly heard noises and concluded that they were being targeted. One of them jumped from the eighth floor and sustained broken limbs. He was declared dead at the scene. One of them ran away whilst the other remained,” said Netshiunda.

He added that the deceased and the other person’s status in the country is in the process of verification.

Meanwhile, the SAPS and the government have warned against acts of vigilantism following reports of people going door to door looking for foreign nationals.

Yesterday (June 30) , one of the fake notices circulating on social media claimed that landlords face R10 000 fines for renting property to undocumented foreign nationals.

Police confirmed the notice is fraudulent and does not originate from the SAPS.

“We encourage the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it. Let us all play our part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement, and respect for the rule of law,” the said in a statement.

Another fake notice that began circulating on social media days before planned nationwide marches claimed an online R250 reward for ‘capturing illegal foreign nationals’.

Government said the notice is false.

“Please ignore and do not share this misinformation. Always verify official government announcements through credible sources,” said police.
