Forensic investigation into Enterprise iLembe ordered amid allegations of corruption
Chief executive Nathi Nkomzwayo was asked by the board to step down, and chief operating officer Thuthu Ngcobo resigned last week as a result of "possible maladministration".
With allegations of corruption following the exit of two senior *Enterprise iLembe officials last Monday, the economic development agency has ordered a full forensic investigation into its operations, North Coast Courier reports.
Chief executive Nathi Nkomzwayo was asked by the board to step down, and chief operating officer Thuthu Ngcobo resigned last week as a result of “possible maladministration”.
Enterprise iLembe chairperson Khanyisani Shandu said the board of directors had a fiduciary duty to question and investigate any form of maladministration, misconduct and allegations of fraud and corruption presented to them.
Commenting on the ousting of CEO Nkomzwayo, Shandu said the board had asked for status updates from management on all the projects in progress.
“It was during this process that information pointing to possible maladministration was uncovered and chief operating officer Thuthu Ngcobo then tendered her resignation.”
Shandu said a special board meeting was held on Friday, November 20 and a decision was taken to conduct a forensic investigation, which is underway.
“We fully understand the seriousness of the situation and want to assure all our stakeholders, partners and the citizens of the iLembe District that the matter is being given the seriousness and priority it demands. Any current or ex-employee found guilty of fraud or misconduct will face consequences as prescribed by law.”
Shandu said the economic development agency for the district municipality was governed by strict laws to do the right thing, without fear or favour.
“We act according to the prescribed code of ethics, and as an appointed board we respect our responsibilities and accountabilities,” he said, adding that they were committed to conducting their operations in accordance with principles of good corporate governance.
Marketing manager Cheryl Peters has been made acting CEO while the investigation is underway.
“Peters has been with Enterprise iLembe for several years and together with the rest of the management team will ensure the continuity of projects and programmes.”
*Enterprise iLembe is the Economic Development Agency for the iLembe District Municipality responsible for Trade & Investment Promotions and Local Economic Development in the region.
