Former SANParks official arrested after Skukuza SAPS storeroom burglary
A former SANParks official allegedly broke into a police storeroom in Skukuza and stealing state-owned items used in poaching investigations.
A 52-year-old former SANParks official was arrested yesterday in connection with a burglary at the SAPS Stock Theft and Endangered Species units’ storeroom in Skukuza on January 23.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, several state-owned items, including crime-scene bags and other equipment, were stolen. A case was opened, and an investigation led to the arrest.
Lowvelder reports police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges as the investigation continues.
“It is alleged that on the day of the incident, the suspect somehow forced the storeroom container open and entered it. He allegedly helped himself to various state-owned items used in poaching-related investigations, as well as cleaning materials and sets of knives.
“The storeroom seems to have been broken into twice by the same suspect. Members of the Stock Theft Unit became suspicious when they noticed something odd outside the storeroom and began investigating. During the investigation, they discovered the burglary and theft of items.”
Mdhluli adds the suspect allegedly tried to cover his tracks by returning some items, but his efforts were unsuccessful as he was ultimately arrested.
“The intention and motive behind this burglary will form part of the police investigation,” he says.
SANParks confirmed the arrest and revealed the suspect resigned from his position on Monday. He is expected to appear in court today.
