Four dead, two arrested in Midrand shoot-out

Multidisciplinary law enforcement teams teamed up to prevent a courier truck transporting electronic devices, from being hijacked.

Four suspects were fatally wounded and two others were arrested in a shoot-out yesterday morning in Midrand, Gauteng.

A multidisciplinary law enforcement team comprising of Special Task Force, National Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Traffic Saturation Unit, Bad Boyz Security and members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Tactical Operations Management Section prevented a truck hijacking in the area.

“It is reported that information was received from Crime Intelligence of a truck that would be hijacked around Midrand. The information was operationalised wherein the identified suspects’ vehicles were noticed on Olifantsfontein Road in Glen Austin,” says Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale.

“Upon realising that the team is about to pounce, the suspects fired shots and a high-speed chase as well as shoot-out ensued. Four suspects were fatally wounded and two others suffered minor injuries which were attended to on scene. The truck is alleged to have been couriering electronic devices. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered on the scene, and the four vehicles used by the suspects had questionable origins which are under investigation,” Mogale explains.

The arrested suspects will appear in court soon.
