Gandhi great granddaughter in R6.3m fraud rap
Ashish Ramgobin, the 45-year-old great granddaughter of peace activist Mahatma Gandhi, made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrates’ Court yesterday on charges of fraud amounting to R6.3 million.
Ramgobin, who is involved in the Gandhi Development Trust and various other activities surrounding the Gandhi settlement in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, was not asked to plead and was released on bail, Phoenix Sun reported.
Ramgobin is alleged to have defrauded two businessmen of millions of rands. She has alleged to have asked them for help to fund her business venture to supply bedding to a hospital group after winning a tender.
There was no such tender and she allegedly provided fraudulent documentation to show that she had containers for linen coming from India.
The attorney representing Ramgobin, Devin Moodley, said his client maintains her innocence and the family stands by her.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman, Luvuyo Mfaku said Ramgobin was released on bail of R50 000 and the case against her was postponed to November 19.
Mfaku added the docket would be transferred to the special fraud and commercial unit for further investigation.
Ramgobin’s bail conditions are strict in that she has to report to the police station every week. She had to surrender her passport and cannot leave the jurisdiction of KZN.
Meanwhile, Ramgobin’s mother, Ela Gandhi, said she stands by and fully supports her daughter, as she believes Ramgobin is being ‘framed’.
