Gauteng licensing officials and driving licence applicants arrested

Fraudulent activities at the Meyerton licensing centre has lead to the arrest of seven people.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC) says more arrests are imminet following the arrest of seven suspects at the Meyerton licensing centre, north of Vereeniging in Gauteng.

The suspects were nabbed for suspicion of fraud relating to the issuing of driving licences. The suspects include licensing officials and driving licence applicants.

The RMTC says one of the officials was found with more than R30 000 in cash believed to be proceeds of the suspected criminal activity.

“The operation was conducted by the RTMC’s national Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit and the Commercial Crimes Unit of the South African Police Service.”

The CEO of RTMC, advocate Makhosini Msibi, who was on the scene to witness the arrests, blamed the greediness of the officials for rampant corruption at the centre.

“It is alleged that officials issued heavy duty driving licences to applicants who were not present to do the test. They also allegedly collude with driving school operators to have intermediaries write learner licence tests on behalf of applicants.”
