George building disaster claims another life
Nine people are still in hospital following the collapse of the apartment building in George.
The death toll of the George Victoria Street building disaster has risen to 34 following the death of one of the victims in hospital over the weekend.
Gerhard Otto, the head of disaster management at Garden Route District Municipality, this morning confirmed the death.
Nine people are still in hospital.
In a statement issued on Friday, authorities officially confirmed that 62 people were on-site when the building collapsed.
The difference between the approximate number of people on-site and the official number is due to:
- Some of the names on the contractor’s list being duplicated
- Official investigations by SAPS confirming that some people on the contractor’s list were not at work on the day of the incident
- CCTV clearly shows that some people on-site left before first responders reached the scene. To date, they have not reported their whereabouts.
The site was officially handed over to SAPS on Friday and has been cordoned off with a green shade net.
Victoria Street has been reopened to traffic.
Once SAPS has completed its investigation, the site will be handed over to the Department of Labour for investigation.
