Grim discovery of dumped calves in George
Authorities and the Garden Route SPCA are investigating a suspected case of animal neglect after multiple carcasses were abandoned on a public pavement.
Residents in Thembalethu, George were greeted by a grim scene after several calf carcasses were dumped in the street on May 9, reports the George Herald.
Unofficial information is that they were dumped on the pavement by a small-scale farmer, possibly with the intention that the meat was to be used by residents. It was further alleged that the calves had died because of neglect and poor care.
The farmer’s identity remains unknown.
Law enforcement officers of the George municipality responded to the scene and removed the carcasses.
Photos and videos shared on social media have confirmed the public’s disgust and dismay over the incident.

The Garden Route SPCA said they also responded to the incident.
Upon arriving at the premises where the calves were initially being kept, GRSPCA Inspector Pypers discovered two additional deceased calves.
Eight calves who were still alive, were removed into the care of GRSPCA for examination and ongoing care. The deceased calves were also taken in as part of the investigation process and for post-mortem examination.
The SPCA said the circumstances surrounding the case are currently being investigated in conjunction with law enforcement authorities.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the SPCA should they have any concerns relating to animal welfare, cruelty, neglect, or animals in distress.
The municipality’s official comment on the matter is still being awaited.
