Home Affairs extends branch hours nationwide for school holiday

More South Africans can now access ID card services after hours as a digital banking partnership expands to over 200 branches.

The Department of Home Affairs has extended its operating hours nationwide to accommodate an expected influx of applicants during the school holidays.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that until July 21, branches will remain open until 18:00 instead of the usual 16:00. The extended hours are specifically aimed at assisting pupils and members of the public who need to apply for or collect their Smart ID cards.

In a statement, the department said the extension forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve access to services while delivering efficient and dignified service.

Expanded banking partnerships

The department also highlighted the expansion of its digital partnership with the banking sector. Announced in June, the initiative now includes 203 participating bank branches. More than 250 000 people have used the service to obtain replacement Smart ID cards since its launch on March 9.

In addition, Home Affairs recently introduced an upgraded online booking system on the MyHomeAffairsOnline platform. The enhanced system includes improved security measures aimed at preventing the abuse of booking slots and making appointments more accessible.
