How to join the G20 women’s shutdown

Women for Change has released a list of safe gathering spots across the country ahead of Friday’s G20 women’s shutdown.

Women for Change (WFC) has released the national meeting points for Friday’s G20 women’s shutdown, urging South Africans to join a coordinated, 15-minute silent lie-down to highlight the country’s GBV crisis.

The nationwide action, set for 12:00 on November 21, the day before the G20 summit, calls on the public to pause, lie down, and mourn the 15 women killed every day in South Africa.

WFC published its list of safe meeting areas on Instagram, encouraging those who prefer to gather in groups to join others in their communities, The Witness reports.

The shutdown aims to pressure government into declaring gender-based violence and femicide a national emergency.

How to take part in the G20 women’s shutdown

  • Lie down in silence for 15 minutes at 12:00
  • Wear black in memory of those killed
  • Join WFC’s livestreams, where the names of victims will be read
  • Use the hashtag #WomenShutdown to amplify the message
  • Choose a safe, visible location — a park, campus, office, living room or any space where you feel comfortable
  • Keep the action peaceful, with no confrontations or disruptions

WFC said the collective pause is meant to send a unified message: South Africans refuse to remain silent as GBV claims lives every day.
