India crush South African hearts with victory over Proteas

It was not meant to be for the South African men's cricket side, which failed in its quest to win its first world cup trophy.

A valiant effort, but it was not to be for the Proteas as they fell short in their quest to claim their first world cup trophy.
The national cricket side suffered a seven-run defeat at the hands of India, which claimed their second T20 World Cup title.

The match:

India won the toss and decided to bat first, posting 176/7 in their 20 overs. Virat Kohli tallied the most runs for India, scoring 76 off 59 balls before eventually being caught by Kagiso Rabada off Marco Jansen’s bowling.

Keshav Maharaj took two wickets and conceded 23 runs in the three overs he bowled. Anrich Nortje also took two wickets, conceding 26 runs in his four overs.

The Proteas then had to chase down 177 to claim their maiden trophy. Heinrich Klaasen was SA’s best batter, scoring 52 runs off 27 balls.

It went down to the wire as 16 runs were required off the last over. Suryakumar Yadav took a spectacular catch to dismiss David Miller with the first ball of the final over. He scored 21 runs off 17 balls.

Kagiso Rabada came in and hit a four to add to the dramatic end to the final, with 12 runs required off four balls after his boundary. He and Maharaj were, however, unable to get the required runs and India claimed the trophy.

Hardik Pandya’s bowling figures of 3/20 in his three overs were the best for the eventual champions, but it’s the economical bowling of Jasprit Bumrah (2/18 in two overs) that broke the Proteas’ momentum.

South Africa playing XI: Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Tabraiz Shamsi.
