Investigations into aeroplane crash near Carletonville continue
Two aeroplanes – one an Air Tractor crop duster – collided on December 29, claiming the lives of three people.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and the SAPS are still busy with investigations to determine what led to a fatal collision between two aeroplanes near Carletonville over the festive season.
The crash occurred on December 29 on the farm Arena in the Houtkoppies area next to the R500 between Carletonville and Magaliesburg.
A Cessna with the owner of the farm, Casper Botha and his wife Estelle, and an Air Tractor crop duster, flown by Hennie Viviers (63), collided at approximately 11:00. All three died in the accident and debris from the planes covered a wide area. The aircraft belonged to Botha.
The Carletonville police opened three cases of culpable homicide as the farm is in the Carletonville policing area. The SACAA is also investigating the accident.
According to SACAA communications manager Sisa Majola they are still conducting investigations, and will only release a preliminary report in about three weeks.
The family held a memorial service for the Botha couple on the farm Thyzendoorn in Rysmierbult on Tuesday. Viviers’ memorial service happened in Kroonstad on January 6.
