Ironman in full swing in Mossel Bay

The event is said to have boosted Mossel Bay’s economy with more than R50m last year.

Thousands of athletes and supporters have gathered in Mossel Bay today for the Isuzu Ironman 70.3 triathlon race.

Participants started the race at 06:30 with a 1.9km swim at Santos Beach. The swim leg is followed by a 90km bike ride and finished off with a 21km run.

The event is also an economic booster for Mossel Bay.

According to Ironman project manager, Werner Smit each Ironman participant gets accompanied by at least three people, drawing more than 7 500 visitors the town.

Mossel Bay Mayor Dirk Kotze says Mossel Bay will host the event for the next three years.

Last year the event boosted the town’s economy with more than R50m.
