Jake: Bulls must man up to Munster
Jake White expects the 'young boys' in the Vodacom Bulls camp to unite as a group for the challenge of facing Munster at Thomond Park on Saturday.
Glasgow Warriors ended the Bulls’ unbeaten start to the 2022-23 Vodacom United Rugby Championship at Scotstoun Stadium, where the visitors were bullied at the breakdown and exposed out wide in a five-tries-to-three 34-21 defeat on Saturday.
“I just said [to the players] I’m disappointed, and they know I’m disappointed. But they themselves are disappointed, too. I’m not a coach who shouts and screams and belittles them now, and tries to break them down,” coach Jake White said post-match.
“We just weren’t good enough, it’s very simple. We weren’t good enough. We looked like young boys [against Glasgow], and we missed some tackles and gave them a good start.
“[But] we’ve got a long tour and long season, and one poor performance doesn’t mean you are not going to win the competition. Last year this time, we had won one game.
“We will work it out together as a group, with the coaches and players. I can’t fast-forward experience and age. If you consider, [Reinhardt] Ludwig is 21, Elrigh Louw is 22, Jan-Hendrik Wessels is 21 … that’s what I’ve got. Unfortunately, that’s what you’ve got to work with.
“And I am saying unfortunately, we can’t fast-forward that but I know that if we spend some time and we learn through these performances – and they get to understand how tough this comp is, then they are going to become better players. And that’s all I can wish for: That they take some learning out of these performances.”
The Bulls will look to return to winning ways against a struggling Munster outfit that has lost three of four matches in the URC.
White added: “We are going to do some homework on Munster, and it’s not going to get any easier as Munster are under the pump – I think they’ve lost three of their four games.
“But there is a positive [from Saturday] that we didn’t get any injuries, and we did score 14 points in the second half after they were so far ahead.
“Had it been for one or two options, we might have been able to get two bonus points there because we were close to scoring a fourth try, and that would’ve made us within seven. So, those are the margins, but we didn’t get that. Now we’ve got to get up and prepare for Munster.”
