The close-knit Jeppe community is shattered after a Grade 11 boy passed away shortly after a rugby match on Tuesday.

According to reports Kaiden Bowie (16) collapsed after feeling unwell in a match between Jeppe High School for Boys and Hoërskool Die Anker. Paramedics tried to save his life, but he was declared dead shortly thereafter.

According to eyewitnesses, the rivalry of the rugby match was instantly forgotten when players, coaches and parents from both teams got together to pray for Bowie after he collapsed.

The school halted classes on Wednesday and while counsellors assisted learners, some who witnessed Bowie collapse.

Condolences have been streaming in after the school posted about Bowie’s death on Facebook and X yesterday (March 6) saying ‘We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of one of our learners, Kaiden Bowie (Grade 11 Koodoo) who tragically passed away yesterday afternoon.’

The Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, said they have sent a support unit to the school and thanked the South African Depression and Anxiety Group for also making their services available for support.
