Jewellery store staff held at gunpoint in Durban heist

Armed robbers stormed a jewellery store at a Durban mall, holding staff at gunpoint before fleeing in two vehicles with stolen goods.

A gang of about 10 armed men stormed a jewellery store at a popular shopping mall north of Durban today, making off with an undisclosed quantity of jewellery.

Northglen News reports that Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram says officers were dispatched at 11:54 after multiple shoppers called their emergency line.

“On arrival, our reaction officers confirmed that the suspects entered the store, held staff at gunpoint and stole jewellery before fleeing the scene,” adds Balram.

The robbers escaped in a silver Toyota Etios and a blue Toyota Starlet. The vehicles’ registrations are unknown at this stage.

No injuries were reported. Police investigations are underway.

The shopping mall could not be reached for comment.
