JMPD officers shot in shootout in Turffontein

This follows an incident where two JMPD officers from the Special Patrol Unit reportedly stopped a suspicious-looking Toyota Fortuner along Rifle Range Road and Gertruida Street.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the driver and passenger left the vehicle. The passenger then drew a pistol and shot at the officers.

“The passenger hit one officer in the shoulder. Officers returned fire and the driver fled the scene on foot.

“The passenger immediately jumped behind the steering wheel of the vehicle, trying to flee from the scene, but he collided with a nearby fence,” said Fihla.

Fihla said the officers then discovered the passenger, now the driver, was shot in the thigh.

“Officers arrested him and he was taken to hospital under police guard. The driver who fled on foot is still at large.

“The injured officer was rushed to Milpark Hospital and the other officer was unharmed,” he said.

The vehicle involved in the incident was reported stolen and the firearm used by the suspect was found in the vehicle.

Cases of attempted murder and possession of a stolen vehicle have been opened at Booysens SAPS for further investigation.
