Johannesburg man killed in shoot-out in Phoenix

The victim celebrated a friend's birthday in the KZN town when four armed suspects stormed a bar and held up employees and patrons.

A 46-year-old man was killed in a shoot-out during a robbery at a bar in Phoenix, KZN, early this morning.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram, they received a call at their Phoenix Operations Centre at 01:02.

“On arrival, reaction officers established that four suspects entered the bar and held up employees and patrons. The deceased drew his firearm and shot one of the suspects.

“A second suspect fired a volley of shots which struck the man in his head and body. He was robbed of his firearm. The injured suspect dragged himself to an awaiting white Suzuki (model and registration unknown) which sped off in an unknown direction,” says Balram.

He explains the man was a Johannesburg resident and was celebrating a friend’s birthday at the time of the incident.

Balram adds that several spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.
