Jub Jub due in Germiston court after kidnapping incident

A 45-year-old TV-personality, who previously spent four years in jail, is set to appear in court again.

Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today (June 15) June), but it has been postponed to Wednesday (June 17), reports Germiston City News.

According to Soweto Urban, he was arrested on charges of kidnapping, discharging a firearm in a public place and defeating the ends of justice following an incident involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale yesterday (June 14).

It is reported that at about 07:30, the driver had transported a woman to a residence in Edenvale when he was confronted by Maarohanye, who accused him of having a romantic relationship with his girlfriend.

According to reports, Maarohanye forced the driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving. During the incident, a firearm was discharged in the driver’s direction, allegedly by Maarohanye.

The driver managed to escape unharmed and immediately drove to a nearby police station to report the matter.

Local police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said officers acted swiftly and arrested Maarohanye shortly after the incident.

Police said investigations are ongoing.

Previous sentencing

In December 2012, Maarohanye was sentenced for murder, attempted murder and related offenses. This conviction stemmed from a 2010 drag-racing incident in Protea North, Soweto, where he and his co-accused crashed into a group of schoolchildren, killing four and permanently brain-damaging two others.

In October 2014, an appeal at the Gauteng High Court overturned his murder convictions to culpable homicide, reducing his sentence. He was released on parole in January 2017 after serving just over four years of his revised sentence, according to Caxton Network News.
