‘Justice for Rein’: Family keeps fight alive after George stabbing

The family and supporters of Reinbrecht Piper (21), who was fatally stabbed at the McDonald’s drive-through on Courtenay Street last month, have established a Facebook page, Justice for Rein, as their campaign for justice continues.

The page shows their concerns surrounding the murder investigation and the decision to grant bail to the two accused, reports the George Herald.

Its creation follows a peaceful march through George last Saturday (October 17), when hundreds of family members, friends and residents braved the cold, rainy weather to demand justice and raise awareness about violent crime.

Dressed in black T-shirts bearing Piper’s photograph, the participants gathered at Unity Park before marching along York Street to JP Spares and back.

Mother calls for safer communities

Piper’s mother, Debbie Kennerley, delivered an emotional message during the march, calling for a thorough investigation into her son’s death and urging the community to stand together against violent crime.

Addressing the crowd before the march, Kennerley said young people should be able to enjoy an evening out with friends without their families having to fear whether they would return home safely.

“We are here because we simply cannot accept violence as part of life in our communities,” she said.

She spoke about the growing number of families forced to bury loved ones because of violence, stressing that such tragedies should never become accepted as normal.

Her message extended beyond her family’s grief, reiterating the need for safer communities in which young people can socialise without fear and parents do not have to worry about whether their children will return home.

Two face murder charge after fatal stabbing

Piper, an electrical apprentice, was stabbed during an altercation at the McDonald’s drive-through at about 02:25 on Sunday (September 27).

He was with two friends when the confrontation occurred. He sustained a stab wound to the chest and was later declared dead in hospital. His friends were also injured.

Five men were initially arrested, but three were subsequently released.

Justin Jafta (28) and Craig Nelson (27) appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court, facing a charge of murder with common purpose.

Both were granted bail of R1 000 on October 1 after the State did not oppose their applications.
