Klaasen, Baartman win top SA20 awards

The award winners were announced last night after the final, with Heinrich Klaasen and Ottniel Baartman grabbing top honours.

Heinrich Klaasen and Ottniel Baartman were named Batsman of the Season and Bowler of the Season, respectively, after yesterday’s SA20 final.

Durban’s Super Giants’ Klaasen was also named Player of the Season after making 447 runs (the second-most, behind Ryan Rickelton’s 530), with a highest score of 85 (off 35 balls) against MI Cape Town.

Klaasen’s strike rate of 207.90 was well above the next best (Kieron Pollard’s 185.14).

Sunrisers Eastern Cape pace bowler Baartman finished with 18 wickets (the second-most in the tournament, behind Marco Jansen’s 20) at an average of 11.77, a strike rate of 10.16 and an economy rate of 6.95.

He claimed two four-wicket hauls (4-12 against the Pretoria Capitals and 4-10 in the first qualifier play-off against Durban’s Super Giants), and took 2-17 in the final, including Klaasen for a first-ball duck.

Considering the experience Jansen has racked up in recent years it’s hard to think of him as a Rising Star, but at 23, the Sunrisers pace bowler and lower-order batsman falls well within the category’s U25 threshold.

He took 20 wickets at an economy rate of 7.66, with figures of 4-16 in the first qualifier play-off and 5-30 in the final, to win that award.
