Klipriver taxi owners die in suspected taxi violence shootings

A case of taxi violence is suspected following the death of a taxi owner after a shooting on the Old Vereeniging Road in Klipriver on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Nombulelo Mohlakoana said that on Tuesday at around 15:30 three taxi drivers and one taxi owner were standing outside a taxi under a tree on Old Vereeniging Road M61 (Springbok Road) in Kliprivier when unknown men in a black sedan motor vehicle with four occupants started shooting at them.

“The taxi owner died immediately whilst one taxi driver died on the other side of the road. Another taxi driver was injured and later transferred to a nearby hospital.

“It is suspected that the shooting could be the result of taxi violence between the Meyerton and Thokoza Taxi Associations. One of the deceased had a firearm with him.

“Later, the family of the taxi owner was informed, and they came and identified the body.”
