KZN DA councillor’s murder: Another suspect arrested

A 31-year-old man is expected to appear in court today in connection with the murder of a DA leader at his home near Mpophomeni.

A second person has been arrested for the murder of DA councillor and uMngeni Municipality chief whip Nhlalayenza Ndlovu in December 2023.

According to an article published by The Witness, the 31-year-old man is expected to appear in the Howick Magistrate’s Court today.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest.

The court is also expected to deliver a ruling on the bail application of Thobani Hlongwa (31), who was arrested in the month Ndlovu was killed.

Hlongwa faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, the murder of Ndlovu, possession of an unlawful firearm and possession of unlawful ammunition.

Ndlovu was gunned down at his home, near Mpophomeni, in full view of his wife and children.

During Hlongwa’s bail application, shocking details emerged, including claims by investigating officer Sergeant Delani Chamane that Hlongwa was part of a notorious Pietermaritzburg gang.

Chamane’s affidavit also revealed that a deposit had been made into Hlongwa’s account following the murder of the chief whip.

At a previous hearing, the state publicly identified the killing as a political assassination.

According to his affidavit, Hlongwa and his associates were hired to kill Ndlovu, though they said they were unaware of his political affiliation.

KZN DA leader Francois Rodgers, uMngeni Municipality mayor Chris Pappas, uMngeni Municipality deputy mayor Sandile Mnikathi, and other councillors are expected to attend the proceedings.
