KZN farm attack victim fights for his life after being shot 4 times

A young man who was shot during a farm attack in Melville remains in an induced coma as communities unite in prayer for his recovery.

A 22-year-old man who was shot four times during a farm attack in Melville, a coastal resort village along the KZN South Coast, on Wednesday afternoon remains in a critical but stable condition.

South Coast Herald reports that, according to Karel Beetge, his son Dewald had just returned home from patrols when he was confronted by intruders and shots were fired.

Dewald was airlifted by helicopter to a Durban hospital, where he is being treated in the ICU surgery ward. He is currently in an induced coma for seven to 10 days to reduce swelling and stop bleeding on the brain.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head. Other injuries include a punctured lung, abdominal wounds and a shot to the hip.

Doctors are expected to decide on possible reconstructive surgery to repair his sinus and remove blockages.

The Pumula community unites to pray for Dewald Beetge’s recovery.

Communities unite in prayer

Residents from Pumula and Hibberdene held prayer vigils this week for Dewald’s recovery.

Karel thanked everyone for the overwhelming support and prayers received.

“The support from all the communities on the South Coast and nationally are most appreciated, God bless every single person,” he said.

Security company calls for urgent prayers

Dewald and his father both work for Gladiator Security.

Dedicated and hardworking, the two have spent years safeguarding the northern suburbs.

Following Wednesday’s tragic incident, the Gladiator team has called for an urgent prayer request for Dewald’s recovery.

“We are devastated, but we remain hopeful. Dewald is a brave member of our Gladiator family and we ask our community to join us in prayer for his recovery, strength and peace. Please keep Dewald, his loved ones and the medical team in your thoughts.”
