KZN floods: Residents evacuated; roads waterlogged

Durban and other parts of the KZN coast have been hit again by flooding devastation after a massive cold front struck the city this weekend. Disaster management teams have started evacuating residents due to the level of damage expected from the heavy rains.

Provincial disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal have begun evacuating residents from sections Durban that have been hit hard by what people are now referring to as the β€˜May floods’.

The city is currently experiencing torrential rains, and many areas have already flooded, with roads collapsing or obstructed by fallen debris, and cars being lifted from the ground.

The disaster management teams are working around the clock to evacuate residents from dangerous locations and to cordon off unsafe roads.

WATCH: uMdloti complex evacuated after washaway

Several residents had to be evacuated from an uMdloti complex on Saturday night as the heavy rains ravaged parts of the KZN north coast.

Search and rescue personnel were out in full force to assist residents affected by localised flooding.

Durban roads waterlogged – motorists advised to drive with caution

Residents and drivers are requested to exercise extreme caution as the rains continued throughout the night.

Several areas have been affected, with many of the roads reported as being waterlogged or completely flooded.

Below is an update on roads to avoid:

πŸ”΅ Riverside Road, that joins the M4 Ruth First Highway, is completely flooded.
πŸ”΅ M4 Southern Freeway both directions – look out for large puddles of water.
πŸ”΅ Umgeni Road west-bound under the N2 bridge is closed to traffic; all lanes are waterlogged.
πŸ”΅ M13 in both directions has lots of water on the roadway as well as mudslides.
πŸ”΅ M7 has mudslides as well as moving water across the roadway. Please avoid using the M7 for safety reasons.
πŸ”΅ Caversham Road in Pinetown is closed to traffic. The road is sunken in and is cordoned off
πŸ”΅ Stapleton Road and Eden Road in Pinetown are flooded – be vigilant.
πŸ”΅ M41 from Phoenix at the N2 south-bound bridge – the road is closed to traffic.
πŸ”΅ South-coast Road to M7 is completely waterlogged and closed to all traffic.
πŸ”΅ N2 near the old airport has large puddles on the road.
πŸ”΅ N3 coming into Durban is also waterlogged – be vigilant.

Umkomaas washaway worsens

Motorists commuting on the R102 between Umkomaas and Ifracombe are warned to be cautious of the washaway next to the road.

The washaway near the Umkomaas River bridge was caused by floods in April. The ongoing rains have caused more sand from under the tar to erode.

Stapleton and Caversham Roads flooded again

Stapleton and Caversham Roads are among some of the roads that are reported to have flooded as the rain continues to pour.

A part of Caversham Road, which was washed away by the April floods, was repaired only a few days ago.
