KZN man due in court after father’s death

The 35-year-old man accused of severely assaulting his father is expected to appear in Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal tomorrow after his father succumbed to his injuries at the weekend.

The deceased, Devraj Gounden, died in hospital on Sunday after he was allegedly assaulted by his son, Andreshan Gounden on 2 August in the Silverglen area, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

Gounden was on life support, in a critical but stable condition, at the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital after he was brutally assaulted by his son at his home in Mountain View Drive.

The suspect was charged with attempted murder and was granted R2000 bail at the time. Following his father’s death, the charge is expected to be changed to one of murder.

Similarly, a 36-year-old man was granted bail by the Ladysmith Magistrates` Court after he allegedly killed his father at his home in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

The deceased, Danny Maharaj, 61, died as a result of injuries he sustained during an assault sparked by an argument between him and his son, Navesh Maharaj, in April.

After his release on bail, Navesh Maharaj attended the funeral of his father and paid his last respect,” said his attorney, Dinesh Lutchman.
